(WHO) described the wide range of WHO initiatives in Ethics and Health since 2002


Maurizio Salvi
(European Commission, EGE) spoke of the European Council decisions on European and international policy in view of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law

Jacob Leveridge (Wellcome Trust) described the support given by the Trust to research ethics mostly in the form of short courses and symposia in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian sub-continent Barbara Sina (Fogarty International Center) described how the International Research Ethics Education & Curriculum Development Award of the US NIH supports research ethics capacity building in developing countries Catherine Elliot (Medical Research Council - UK) explained the Council’s specific interest in ethical review capacity building in Africa and advocating for good practice in clinical research

Laurence Lwoff
(Council of Europe) spoke of the council’s initiatives in ethics such as the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine and the Additional Protocol on Biomedical Research

 

Hugh Whittall (Nuffield Council on Bioethics) discussed the council’s report, The Ethics of Research Related to Healthcare in Developing Countries (2002), covering all relevant ethical issues Gottfried Kreutz (CIOMS) explained how the council provides recommendations on ethics in medical research such as the International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects (2002) Rene von Schomber (European Commission DG Research) defined the EU research funding framework which requires consistency with values enshrined in the European Charter
Eugenijus Gefenas , Indra Giraite and Asta Cekanauskaite – bringing GFBR8 to a close with Sandra Realpe , Ethics Officer, Secretariat-GFBR
